For Rose Ebirim, the trauma of witnessing a terrorist attack on March 13, 2016, has been a long and arduous journey to overcome. As she picks up litter on the beach and organizes the annual International Day of Reggae celebrations, she finds solace in these activities, a form of therapy that has helped her heal.
A Day of Infamy: The 2016 Terrorist Attack
The attack, which lasted 45 minutes, saw three gunmen open fire on three adjacent hotels, killing 19 people, including nine foreigners. The incident, claimed by Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), was a devastating blow to the nation, leaving deep scars that would take years to heal. It wasn't until December 2022 that justice was served, with 11 men sentenced to death for their roles in the attack.
A Region on High Alert: The Threat of Jihadism
The threat of terrorism still looms large in the region, particularly in the north, where the borders with Mali and Burkina Faso are porous and vulnerable to jihadist infiltration. The expulsion of French and American troops from these countries has led to a shift in alliances, with Russia becoming a key partner.
