UK Plumber / Gas Engineer Job + Visa

United Kingdom

Before you read further: four corrections that determine your approach

The visa route expires at the end of 2026 unless renewed. SOC 5315 sits at RQF Level 3 in the Temporary Shortage List. The TSL was introduced on 22 July 2025 as a time-limited mechanism allowing sub-degree trades to remain sponsorable when a genuine shortage exists. All TSL entries are currently scheduled to expire on 31 December 2026. The Migration Advisory Committee's Stage 2 report, expected in July 2026, will determine which occupations continue. Plumbing and gas engineering have been among the most persistently under-supplied UK trades for a decade, making continuation plausible, but no extension is guaranteed. Workers who delay applying into late 2026 risk a Certificate of Sponsorship assigned after the mechanism lapses. Apply early.

You cannot work on gas in the UK on the strength of your overseas gas qualification alone. This is the most practically consequential fact on this page for internationally trained gas engineers. The Gas Safe Register is the UK's mandatory scheme for all engineers who work on gas appliances. Membership requires passing the UK Accredited Certification Scheme assessments for each appliance category, such as domestic natural gas, domestic LPG, commercial catering, and industrial gas. These assessments test UK-specific gas safety standards, regulations, and procedures. An engineer with twenty years of gas experience from any country must still complete these assessments before they can legally touch a gas appliance on UK soil. The ACS process cannot be started remotely. It must be completed in the UK. This means every overseas gas engineer faces a period of several months between arriving in the UK and being legally able to work on gas.

The Skilled Worker visa requires employment, not self-employment. A large proportion of experienced UK plumbers and gas engineers operate as self-employed sole traders or limited company directors. The Skilled Worker visa does not permit self-employment. You must be employed by a sponsor-licensed employer on a PAYE basis. This structural requirement eliminates the most common working arrangement in the UK plumbing trade as a sponsorship vehicle and means your job search must focus specifically on employers who run employees on PAYE payrolls rather than subcontract work to self-employed engineers.

The visa minimum salary sits above the UK median for this occupation. The going rate for SOC 5315 for Skilled Worker visa purposes is £38,100 per year. The UK median salary for plumbers and heating engineers is approximately £36,556. The visa minimum of £38,100 sits at approximately the 56th percentile of what UK employers actually pay. This means that roughly half of all UK plumbing jobs that are legitimately advertised pay below the level required to sponsor an overseas engineer. Many employer offers that look competitive in the market do not clear the visa threshold. Verify every salary figure against the current going rate for SOC 5315 before accepting any offer.

1. Overview

The UK plumbing and gas engineering trade is in a structural shortage driven by an ageing workforce and chronic under-recruitment into apprenticeships. Approximately 27,000 additional plumbers will be needed by 2030 according to CITB workforce projections. The average age of UK gas engineers registered with Gas Safe continues to rise, with industry associations noting that a significant proportion of the registered workforce is approaching retirement and entry-level domestically trained engineers are not replacing them at sufficient volume.

The net zero transition is expanding demand rather than containing it. The UK government's heat pump installation targets, part of the broader net zero heat strategy, require approximately 600,000 heat pumps to be installed annually by 2028. Each heat pump installation requires a qualified plumber or heating engineer, and many also require an MCS-certified installer. The current domestic training capacity falls significantly short of this target. This creates an additional dimension of demand for qualified heating engineers with heat pump knowledge on top of the already-established gas boiler and domestic plumbing shortage.

The opportunity for internationally trained plumbers and heating engineers who are willing to navigate the Gas Safe registration process, the ACS assessments, and the TSL visa framework is genuine and financially meaningful. Experienced gas engineers who hold UK Gas Safe registration regularly earn between £40,000 and £55,000 annually as employed engineers, with specialist heat pump engineers and commercial gas engineers reaching higher. The UK is also one of the most accessible major English-speaking destinations for trade-level visa sponsorship in 2026, with a faster and more straightforward sponsorship pathway than Australia's ACILA framework and a broader trade eligibility list than the standard Canadian Express Entry route.

The overall picture of which UK trades remain sponsorable in 2026, and the December 2026 TSL deadline affecting this and related occupations, is covered in more detail in our guide to the UK Construction Worker Job and Skilled Worker Visa. For a comparison with a similar trade-level sponsorship that follows the same TSL structure and deadline, our guide to the UK Scaffolder Job and Visa Sponsorship is directly relevant. For context on how the TSL deadline affects non-trade roles in transport, our UK HGV and Lorry Driver Job and Visa Sponsorship guide covers a parallel situation in the logistics sector.

2. Eligibility

Occupation and SOC code

Plumbers, gas engineers, and heating and ventilating installers and repairers are classified under SOC 2020 code 5315. This covers roles including plumber, gas engineer, domestic heating engineer, commercial gas engineer, LPG engineer, heating and ventilating installer, and combination roles such as plumbing and heating engineer. The SOC code is assigned by the employer when issuing the Certificate of Sponsorship and must accurately reflect the actual primary duties of the role. Engineers whose duties are primarily at the mechanical or building services engineering level, involving design and specification rather than hands-on installation, may qualify under higher-level engineering SOC codes that sit on the standard RQF Level 6 table rather than the TSL.

Visa mechanism and current status

SOC 5315 is eligible through the Temporary Shortage List as a sub-degree RQF Level 3 occupation. The going rate is £38,100 per year. No dependant visas can be issued under TSL sponsorship. The current TSL entries expire on 31 December 2026. Workers who had Skilled Worker visas under previous rules, including the old Shortage Occupation List before it was replaced, and who have held them continuously since before 22 July 2025, can extend under the previous conditions until 22 July 2028.

Salary requirement

The minimum salary for a sponsored plumber or gas engineer under current rules is whichever is higher of the applicable general threshold and the going rate of £38,100. For most new standard applications, the binding minimum is £38,100 per year since the general threshold of £41,700 exceeds the going rate. If the employer is accessing the ISL-reduced threshold for specific qualifying circumstances, the going rate floor of £38,100 applies. In practice, for most new applicants, employers must pay at least £38,100 guaranteed basic annual salary. Only gross guaranteed salary counts. Overtime, call-out allowances, tool allowances, van allowances, and shift premiums are all excluded from the salary calculation.

Trade qualifications

For plumbing roles without a gas component, NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Plumbing and Domestic Heating, or an equivalent overseas qualification, is the standard expectation. For gas work, the UK ACS qualification and Gas Safe registration are legal requirements, not optional credentials, as described throughout this page. For heat pump work, MCS certification through an MCS-registered company is required for work on MCS-eligible installations. Overseas qualifications in plumbing, gas engineering, or mechanical services do not confer UK trade certification. They may be used as evidence of prior learning during the ACS assessment process, but they do not substitute for the UK assessments themselves.

English language

CEFR B2 English is required for all new Skilled Worker visa applicants from 8 January 2026. This applies to TSL-route plumbing and gas engineering applications in the same way as all other Skilled Worker routes. Applicants whose prior education was conducted in English should verify whether their qualification satisfies the Home Office's approved exemption list before assuming a test is not required.

Gas Safe and ACS: the specific UK legal requirements for gas work

The Gas Safe Register (gassaferegister.co.uk) is the official list of businesses legally allowed to carry out gas work in the UK. Every engineer who works on gas appliances in the UK, including natural gas, LPG, and other specified gas types, must work for a Gas Safe registered business and must hold the relevant ACS qualification for the specific appliance types they work on. The ACS covers specific appliance categories: domestic natural gas, domestic LPG, commercial catering gas, industrial and commercial gas, natural gas pipework and meters, and others. An engineer must be assessed for and pass the ACS in each specific category they intend to work in. Passing the domestic natural gas ACS does not permit work on commercial gas appliances, and vice versa.

Overseas gas engineers who want to work in the UK must complete the ACS assessments in the UK, at an AQA or City and Guilds approved assessment centre. The assessments test knowledge of UK Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, UK-specific appliance types, UK gas safety standards, and practical competency on UK equipment formats. A full domestic ACS package for an experienced engineer who undertakes appropriate preparation typically takes two to three weeks of intensive training and assessment and costs approximately £1,500 to £3,000 depending on the number of appliance categories and the training provider used. Some employers fund this on behalf of international recruits as part of their onboarding investment.

3. Skills Employers Actually Want

A review of sponsored plumbing and gas engineering job postings from sponsor-licensed UK employers across England, Scotland, and Wales, and from specialist trades recruitment agencies, shows the following consistent requirements.

Gas Safe registration with relevant ACS certifications is the primary requirement for any gas-related role and is listed first in virtually every gas engineer job description. Employers who are willing to sponsor an overseas engineer and fund their ACS assessments on arrival represent a specific and valuable employer category to target. Most will specify which ACS categories they need covered and whether they will fund the assessment pathway or require the engineer to hold existing certification before starting.

Domestic boiler installation, commissioning, and servicing experience is the highest-demand skill set in the residential sector. The UK domestic gas market runs predominantly on natural gas-fired central heating systems with combination boilers. Engineers who have extensive experience installing and servicing combi boilers, including fault diagnosis, gas rate checking, flue analysis, and commissioning documentation, are in the strongest position for residential heating contractor roles.

Heat pump installation and commissioning experience is the fastest-growing premium specialism in the UK heating market. MCS-certified heat pump engineers can earn materially above standard gas engineer rates. Engineers from countries where heat pump technology is more advanced or more widely deployed, including Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Scandinavian countries, are particularly well positioned in this specialism.

Bathroom and wet room installation, Unvented hot water system qualification such as G3 certification, and underfloor heating installation all appear regularly in combined plumbing and heating engineer job specifications and broaden the range of work an employer can assign, which strengthens the business case for sponsorship.

Accurate documentation and job management system competency is expected in commercial and facilities management contexts. UK building services compliance requirements including gas safety records, CP12 landlord certificates, F-gas certification for refrigerant-containing heat pumps, and Building Regulations Part L compliance documentation are all part of the working landscape of employed gas engineers.

A full UK driving licence is listed as required in almost every employer-sponsored plumbing and gas engineering role, since the work is site-based and employers provide work vans to enable movement between jobs.

4. Step-by-Step Path

Step 1: Identify your exact trade category and documentation

Determine whether you are applying as a pure plumber (no gas work), a gas engineer (gas work only), a combined plumbing and heating engineer, or a specialist engineer in commercial gas or heat pumps. Each category has different UK certification requirements and attracts different employer profiles. Gather your overseas trade certificates, employment reference letters from prior plumbing or gas employers specifying job titles and duties, any health and safety qualifications, and your passport. Reference letters should specify whether your work involved gas appliances, the specific appliance types you worked on, and the volume of your installation or maintenance experience.

Step 2: Find a sponsor-licensed employer willing to hire internationally and fund ACS

The most critical employer search characteristic for an overseas gas engineer is finding a company that holds an active sponsor licence and is willing to hire you before your UK Gas Safe registration is in place, funding your ACS assessment pathway as part of your employment package. These employers exist but are a subset of all UK plumbing and gas companies. Major employers with documented track records of international sponsorship include facilities management and building services companies such as Mitie, Integral UK, CBRE Building Services, Atalian Servest, and larger regional heating contractors who operate on commercial or social housing contracts. Housing associations, local authorities, and NHS estates departments that employ engineers directly rather than subcontracting have also sponsored overseas engineers and have HR capacity to manage the permit process.

Contact employers directly by explaining your trade background, specifying your overseas gas qualification, confirming that you understand the UK ACS requirement, and asking whether they have a pathway for sponsoring overseas engineers through their ACS registration. This targeted, informed approach distinguishes you from candidates who are unaware of the Gas Safe requirement and saves both parties time.

Step 3: Verify the employer's sponsor licence and confirm the offer salary meets the going rate

Before investing time in any application process, verify the employer's sponsor licence on the Home Office public register. Confirm the guaranteed basic annual salary in the offer meets at least the going rate of £38,100. Van allowance, call-out pay, overtime, and tool allowance are all excluded. The basic salary alone must clear the threshold.

Step 4: Employer issues Certificate of Sponsorship under SOC 5315

Once the offer is confirmed, the employer assigns a Certificate of Sponsorship through the Sponsor Management System with SOC code 5315, the agreed salary, and the expected start date. Confirm all details on the CoS match your offer letter precisely. Errors in SOC code, salary, or start date require the employer to assign a new CoS and delay your application.

Step 5: Apply for your Skilled Worker visa

Submit your visa application with your CoS reference number, English language evidence, criminal record certificate, and health documentation. Processing for applications from outside the UK typically takes three to eight weeks, with priority processing available. Apply up to three months before your intended start date.

Step 6: Arrive and begin the ACS assessment pathway immediately

On arrival, the Gas Safe ACS assessment process is your immediate priority if your role involves gas work. Agree with your employer before arriving exactly which assessment categories they need you to hold, what training provider or assessment centre they are using, and whether the assessment cost and any preparation training cost are being funded by them or by you. Begin the process within your first week. For experienced gas engineers, the ACS assessments themselves may take two to three weeks once properly prepared. For the period between arrival and Gas Safe registration, your employer can assign non-gas plumbing work, administrative duties, or supervised observation that does not constitute unsupervised gas work.

Step 7: Obtain Gas Safe registration and begin full gas duties

Once ACS assessments are passed, the employer registers you on the Gas Safe Register under their company registration. From this point, you can legally work on gas appliances in the UK within the specific categories your ACS certification covers. Your Gas Safe registration is renewed annually and requires ongoing CPD relevant to gas work.

5. Real-World Challenges

The Gas Safe gap period affects your employer's business from day one

An employer who sponsors a gas engineer but cannot immediately use them for gas work is managing a resource planning problem from the start. The most successful international gas engineer sponsorships are structured with a clear plan for the ACS gap period, with the engineer contributing through plumbing work, site preparation, commercial gas work if the employer holds commercial contracts and the engineer has commercial gas experience, or other non-domestic-gas duties while the domestic assessment pathway completes. Engineers who arrive without clarity on this arrangement sometimes find themselves in an uncomfortable position where the employer's patience is tested by a longer-than-expected ACS timeline.

ACS assessment failure rates for overseas engineers

The ACS domestic gas assessments test UK-specific regulations, appliance types, and safety procedures that differ from the standards in most countries. Engineers who prepare only on the basis of their overseas experience, without specifically studying the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and current UK Approved Document J, fail at higher rates than those who prepare specifically for the UK format. Assessment centres typically charge the full fee per attempt, and a failed attempt delays Gas Safe registration by the time needed to resit. Budget and plan for preparation as seriously as for the assessment itself.

The December 2026 TSL deadline creates urgency

As discussed in the page introduction, SOC 5315's current TSL eligibility expires on 31 December 2026. For applicants who are currently in the early stages of their job search, the practical timeline of finding a sponsor-licensed employer, negotiating an offer, completing the LMNT if required, issuing a CoS, and having a visa granted, could comfortably extend to nine to twelve months from today if not managed with urgency. Workers who want their CoS assigned while the current mechanism is in force should treat August 2026 as the practical deadline for having a job offer accepted and a CoS issued, not December. A CoS assigned in November 2026 under a mechanism that expires in December creates uncertainty about extensions and employer changes before the mechanism's future is confirmed.

Self-employment and the CIS trap

The Construction Industry Scheme covers tax arrangements for self-employed tradespeople in the UK. A significant proportion of UK plumbers and gas engineers operate under the CIS as self-employed subcontractors. The Skilled Worker visa does not permit self-employment. Workers who arrive on a Skilled Worker visa and begin working through a CIS scheme, even if they believe it is equivalent to PAYE employment, are in breach of their visa conditions. Confirm explicitly with any employer that your engagement is on a PAYE employed basis, with employer National Insurance contributions, before signing any contract.

Cost of tool setup, van, and professional registration on arrival

Gas Safe registration, annual renewal fees, ACS assessment fees, tool purchase or shipping costs, and the van or travel costs incurred before an employer-provided vehicle is assigned can together represent a substantial upfront expense before your first payslip arrives. Budget specifically for the first three months as a higher-cost period than your steady-state monthly expenditure will be.

6. Where to Apply

Facilities management and building services companies

Large building services employers including Mitie Group, Integral UK, CBRE Building Services, Atalian Servest, and Amey all operate at national scale, hold sponsor licences, employ engineers on PAYE contracts, and have HR infrastructure capable of managing Skilled Worker sponsorship. Their scale means they can absorb the ACS gap period more easily than small plumbing firms. All maintain career portals with live vacancies.

Social housing and local authority employers

Housing associations and local authorities that manage large residential property portfolios employ gas engineers and heating engineers directly on salaried contracts to deliver responsive repairs, gas safety certifications, and planned maintenance programmes. These employers offer stable employment, defined working hours, and often fund professional development including MCS certification. They typically advertise on the Government's Find a Job service and on specialist public sector job boards.

Gas and heating contractor companies with international sponsorship history

Some regional and national gas installation and maintenance contractors have established international recruitment pipelines and can sponsor engineers through the ACS pathway. Searching the Home Office register of licensed sponsors filtered by the plumbing and maintenance sector, combined with searches on Indeed UK, Reed.co.uk, and CWJobs for sponsored plumbing or gas engineer roles, identifies companies that are actively set up to sponsor.

Specialist trades recruitment agencies

Hays Engineering and Facilities, Randstad Engineering, and trades-specialist agencies with gas engineering divisions can advise on which employers in their client networks currently hold active sponsor licences and are recruiting internationally. Confirming the agency's knowledge of the TSL mechanism and the Gas Safe ACS pathway before engaging saves time on both sides.

Heat pump and renewable energy contractors

The UK's heat pump installation market is growing rapidly under government targets, and several contractors in this space specifically recruit engineers with heat pump experience and are willing to sponsor under the TSL while providing MCS certification pathways. Indeed UK and the MCS certified installer directory (mcscertified.com) both surface these employers.

7. Timeline Expectation

Weeks 1 to 4: Prepare your trade documents: overseas gas or plumbing certificates, employment reference letters specifying gas appliance categories worked on, English language evidence, and passport. Research sponsor-licensed facilities management and heating contractor employers. Make contact with HR teams explaining your background and asking specifically about sponsorship and ACS support.

Weeks 4 to 10: Interview process with target employers. Agree offer including confirmation that salary meets £38,100 going rate in guaranteed basic pay, that the role is PAYE employed, that the employer holds an active sponsor licence, and that the ACS assessment pathway is funded or clearly arranged. Employer assigns Certificate of Sponsorship under SOC 5315.

Weeks 10 to 14: Visa application submitted. Priority processing if needed. Visa granted within three to eight weeks from submission.

Weeks 14 to 16: Arrive in UK. Begin non-gas plumbing duties with employer. Enrol in ACS preparation course at approved assessment centre. Begin studying Gas Safety Regulations and UK-specific standards.

Weeks 16 to 20: Complete ACS assessments for required appliance categories. Employer submits Gas Safe registration application. Gas Safe card issued.

Month 5 onwards: Full gas duties begin. Accumulate UK Gas Safe employment record. Work toward additional certifications including unvented hot water (G3), heat pump MCS, or commercial gas ACS categories depending on employer's work scope.

Year 5: After five years of continuous Skilled Worker residence, apply for ILR provided the TSL mechanism has been renewed or your role has transitioned to a standard sponsorship route at the relevant point.

8. Mistakes to Avoid

Arriving expecting to work on gas immediately. You cannot. No overseas gas qualification permits gas work in the UK without ACS certification and Gas Safe registration. Any employer who tells you otherwise either does not understand UK gas law or is asking you to break it. Illegal gas work in the UK carries prosecution risk, employer liability, and in worst cases endangers residents. The ACS pathway is not bureaucratic friction. It is a legal requirement that exists because gas safety failures are potentially fatal.

Not checking whether the employer holds a sponsor licence before investing time in an application. Sponsorship enthusiasm and sponsorship capacity are different things. Verify the employer on the Home Office public register of licensed sponsors before attending any interview. Many small plumbing and gas companies want to sponsor but do not hold licences and would take months to obtain one.

Accepting a salary below £38,100 in guaranteed basic pay. The going rate for SOC 5315 is £38,100. This is above the UK median for this trade. Many legitimate UK employer offers fall below it. The visa will be refused if the guaranteed basic salary does not meet this threshold regardless of what additional allowances are included. Confirm the guaranteed basic pay specifically before accepting any offer.

Planning around the December 2026 TSL deadline without real urgency. A twelve-month job search and visa application timeline starting in July 2026 risks a CoS assigned after the current mechanism expires. If you are beginning your UK plumbing or gas engineering job search in mid-2026, treat it as an urgent process rather than a leisurely one. The MAC's July 2026 Stage 2 report will give more clarity on renewal, but waiting for that report before beginning your search means the window for safe CoS assignment before December 2026 may have closed.

Taking subcontract or CIS work. If your visa requires PAYE employment and you work under a CIS self-employment arrangement, you are in breach of your visa conditions from day one. This can result in visa curtailment and removal. Confirm PAYE explicitly in your contract before beginning any work.

Treating Gas Safe registration as an administrative step rather than a preparation project. Engineers who underestimate the UK-specific content of the ACS assessments and approach them on the basis of overseas experience alone fail at higher rates than those who study specifically for the UK format. Allocate real preparation time and cost to this step.

9. Next Action

Identify which Gas Safe appliance categories your target employer will need you to cover and look up the cost of the ACS assessment package for those categories at an approved UK assessment centre. This single research step tells you the upfront cost and timeline of the most consequential step in your entire UK pathway before you commit to anything else. At the same time, open the Home Office public register of licensed sponsors and search for companies in the building services and facilities management sector. Cross-reference any names you already have in mind against the register. Those two actions, ACS cost research and sponsor licence verification, set the realistic financial and timeline parameters within which everything else in this process operates. Approach any employer who is both on the register and willing to fund your ACS pathway as a priority over all other leads, regardless of marginal differences in the basic salary offered.
